Using our brains to understand the Martial Arts syllabus, using our body to practise
This seems obvious, learn to listen to your body, work through the syllabus, actively ticking things off. We are all students, those who teach and those who watch to learn. We are all repetitively practise to improve. With dedication, patience and motivation, we build momentum, keep improving. Polish all the impurities away, become aware of what you know, and retain that, and start identifying what you don’t know.
Dedication, patience and motivation improves your Martial Arts training
This can be where grading really improves progress rather than measuring it, it provides a signpost as to where your attention should be. This is not to say you should ignore other instruction. When the class covers something you know you are ready for your next grade, it’s time to really focus and be proud.
When people spot a black belt on you they often ask how long you have been training, what they often mean to ask is how long will it take them to get a belt like that.
One thing is for sure, it varies from person to person and art to art, if you don’t start walking along the path actively and with mindfulness, it will take you a lot longer, or more likely it will never happen, especially if you have already decided at some level within you that you aren’t capable.
Print out your syllabus, make it yours. Ask your instructors questions relentlessly, help to improve them too. It will take as long as it takes.

At The Choi Foundation Martial Arts class we use our brains constantly throughout a class. Martial Arts is body training a combination of moves (punching and kicking), we call a pattern, used to defend yourself. Everyone has a stronger side and is prefered be to use. Our classes uses both sides of the body equally and we encourage to use the weaker side first. Most other sports concentrate on one part of the body e.g. cycling, running and tennis.
